the best 10 i found in ‘11
end of the year lists are terribly cliche. but i dont care. listed below are the 10 best songs of 2011 as i found them. you may disagree, and you’re entitled to that. i’m also entitled to either disagree with you or not give a fuck what you think. that remains to be seen. enjoy:
10. james blake & bon iver: fall creek boys choir. weird-ass indie collaboration. awesome results. if you can understand the words, you either wrote the song our you’re full of shit. i don’t care either way, the song kicks ass: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5aqKA_2UUy4
9. coldplay: paradise. every industry needs a leader. when thom yorke bitched out after bono fell off, chris martin took the lead. he hasn’t let it go since. the video may supersede the brilliance of the song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1G4isv_Fylg&ob=av2e
8. maroon 5: never gonna leave this bed. living in hollywood, i see prettyboys with tattoos every day. none of them can hold an audience like adam levine. bad tattoos and nbc ego to ignore, this song and video kick ass: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADmCFmYLns4
7. adele: someone like you. everyone has pain. a few people per generation can turn that into a song. a small percentage of them turn that into a song that means anything. adele has the soul and unbelievable voice to back up the pain: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAc83CF8Ejk
6. birdy: 1901. it would be less impressive if she wasn’t a teenage and it wasn’t better than the original. but she’s not legal to drink and it kick’s phoenix’s ass. watch out for her in the years to come: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ESoonspLS1g&ob=av3e
5. lady gaga: edge of glory. i’ll be honest, she annoys me. and she annoyed me 20 years ago when her name was madonna and she did the same shit on a cooler version of mtv. the big man found his final stand, and the boss can rest easy knowing it was with someone who was genuinely talented (the sax solo is more than worth the wait): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QeWBS0JBNzQ&ob=av2e
4. james blake: case of you. if any man could cover joni mitchell, it’s james blake. the feeling he puts behind this song gives me chills: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IG2E3qyFqsw&ob=av2n
3. adele: set fire to the rain. there’s a reason she’s on here twice. if you have to ask, i probably wont like you. take in the brilliance that is her voice and feeling mixed with the lyrics. if you still aren’t convinced, listen until you are: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBcMKwbMEcQ
